26.2 acts of kindness to practice in honor of boston

happy tuesday, everybody.
i know there are tons of boston-related posts floating around the internet today.
i thought about not posting at all. and then i thought about being super raw & honest [maybe for another day].
i think a lot of folks are frustrated. angry. hurt. feeling like their tribe [athletes // runners] was attacked without reason.

i am a strong believer in being nice to people. in being grateful for each day. in hugging harder & being a bit nicer than necessary.
every single day is a good day to be a better human.
when tragedy hits [newton, aurora, the shootings in arizona, ect] people think 'im going to doing something nice // hug my child tight, ect'. and they do. and then a few days later, life takes over again & we forget how lucky we are in this life. [example : the middle east deals with bombings and terror on a daily basis!]
so, i suggest you do something nice. today. tomorrow. in 6 months. and every day in between.
its never a bad time to be nice.
here are 26.2 easy [cheap, free, simple] ways to be a better human!

1) collect tissue boxes, toilet paper & paper towel rolls, pens, pencils, notebooks, markers & crayons from around your house and donate them to a local elementary school or a community ed center.
2) send a letter to your grandparents.
3) donate to a kickstarter campaign that is doing awesome things.
4) buy a few extra items at the grocery store & donate them to the food shelf // bank.
5) do you get the sunday paper? cut the coupons & donate them to the store // a neighbor // friend // a local womens shelter.
6) let someone merge on the interstate or go first at a 4-way stop.
7) take a bouquet of flowers to the hospital ; the nurses will know who to give it to.
8) donate your kids' unused books [or spend $10 at your local thrift store] to a childrens hospital [or a school!]
9) send a note of thanks to your local EMT // police station // firehouse. the tragedy we see on tv & in pictures is nothing compared to the work these folks run TOWARDS every day!
10) pick up some trash in your neighborhood. we all live here ; together.
11) become an organ donor.
12) have an awesome customer service experience? tell everybody. your friends, family, the manager & the staff.
13) go to a laundromat or your apartment laundry room & load a washer & dryer with quarters for the next person.
14) send a friend a mix cd.
15) SLOW DOWN when you see dogs, kids, walkers, joggers & people on bikes. you might not think 35MPH is much in a car, but its fast & scary for a pedestrian.
16) send an anonymous gift to a friend or sibling.
17) leave a 'you are awesome' note on a random car windshield.
18) donate blood.
19) send your parents flowers or a note of thanks on YOUR birthday.
20) leave a copy of your favorite book on the bus // train // plane // cafe with a note inside.
21) plant a tree.
22) leave the little things alone ; a bad hair day. a cat that didnt use the litterbox. a partner that didnt vacuum the floor. those things dont matter in the grand scheme of life. move on. be thankful.
23) volunteer at a local animal shelter. bring in a 5 pound bag of food. or make // purchase a few toys. or bring in toys // supplies that your animal is no longer using. offer to take a couple dogs out for a run // walk. foster a dog, if you can.
24) pay for the person behind you. at the toll booth. the movies. in the drive-thru.
25) sew a few turbans for cancer patients // or knit a few hats for NICU babies.
26) rake // shovel a neighbors yard or sidewalk.
.2) be good to YOU. stop the negative self-talk. you are doing okay in this life.

be nice to each other.
we are all in this together.

9 netflix documentaries that will make you a better human

happy friday!
you made it to the end of the week! big plans for the weekend?
how about some 'movie time'?!
blake & i have the basic netflix plan ; $8 a month. we dont have television, but we are big fans of 'real tv.' we watch a lot of world news tonight, 20/20 & netflix documentaries.
today i have 9 documentaries you should add to your queue.
here we go :

1) beyond the myth. daphne is part pitbull & she is a rescue. in the past 8 months that we have had her in our lives, we have become so much more aware of the stigma around pits. our pup is naughty, but she is so super sweet. blake & i both cried our way through this one. i couldnt imagine having to give up daphne because of reasons beyond our [and her!] control.

2) yes! please vote for me. a story of 8 year olds in china all vying for the position of class monitor. fascinating to watch democracy play out in chinese culture.
here

3) another one about kids + education ; the lottery. you know that i have my teaching degree & blake is a preschool teacher, right? education in this country is so interesting to us. this one is about public + charter schools is harlem & the bronx. we see what is going right [and not so right] in educational reform. bonus : cory booker is in it. LOVE him.
here

4) forks over knives. you have probably already seen this one, right? if not, i [and most of america] highly recommend it. the film proposes that almost EVERY SINGLE AILMENT can be cured // reversed by a plant-based diet. go see.
here

5) craiglist joe. this movie gave me goosebumps & made me cry [lots of times]. we follow a regular guy as he travels the country COMPLETELY relying on craiglist. for food, rides, dance classes, volunteer opportunities ; all of it. this movie made my heart so huge to see how amazing total strangers are. i really do believe in the kindness of random humans.
here

6) america the beautiful. a film by darryl roberts ; so good. this film is about beauty // the industry // plastic surgery. really well done & it just makes me want to hug every single girl [woman!] that thinks she isnt good enough!

7) america the beautiful 2 : the thin commandments. like the first one, this one focuses on health & beauty. but this time, its about weight, weight loss & the crippling diet mentality. again, this one is so good.
here

8) how to live forever. i love stuff like this! i strongly believe that working out, eating well & being a good person will allow you to live to 100. and then there are films like this that show people who smoke & drink and can run a marathon [and they are 60 years older than me]! we meet multiple people, all in upper-age who share their 'live to 100' secrets.
here

9) outrage. this one is a bit scandalous. i am a sucker for political documentaries. also, i am extremely liberal, when we are talking about politics. the bottom line of this film is the anit-gay agenda of some of the biggest closeted gays in washington. films like this allow for SO much discussion in our house.
here

have you seen any of these?
anything else you can recommend?

you can see 10 more netflix docs i love here & here is a list of shows // movies that we have seen // are hoping to watch soon!

oh sugar, sugar : the tale of the sweetest candy shop ever

thursday!
fun news ; i have today, tomorrow & ALL weekend off. whoop whoop.
im excited to share my adventures when we get back.

but first : lets talk about candy!
i really am more of a 'chocolate & cupcake' girl myself, but a couple times a year, i get a real craving for sugary candies.
blake & i make a real effort to explore and support new [to us] businesses in the city.
earlier this winter, we planned a trip to sugar, sugar.
its a small-ish candy shop [with great lighting!] & sweets from all over the world.

way cute, right?
one of my 101 things in 1001 days is 'to spend $15 in a candy store.'
mission accomplished.

we left with 3 small bags ; 1 bag of banana gummies, another of sour worms [i loved these when i was a kid!] & a bag of grape-flavored marshmallows.
all delish!

if you live in the area, head over & grab some treats.
connect with sugar, sugar :

any rad shops like this in your neighborhood?

5 kickstarter campaigns that are making the planet better

march!
lets go ;) did you see my goals for the month?
i have so many awesome things to blog about this month.

today, lets talk about kickstarter!
its a website where anybody with an awesome idea [food, fashion, books] can raise money to fund their dream. when you donate money, you get rewards in return.
i love it. blake & i have donated to lots of campaigns ; most of which have gotten funded.
ive got 5 awesome projects that are looking for YOUR help!

1) the yogo mat! the worlds smallest, lightest, cleanest full-size yoga mat. folds up the size of a wine bottle [love this!] it can be recycled, will biodegrade AND its made in the US [in oregon]. i am donating to this one, for sure. i love the idea of being able to toss this mat in my bike bag on the way to class!
ends march 15th // donate here

2) the garden creamery is a vegan food truck based in san francisco. they are looking for funding to be able to sell // create vegan soft serve!! four flavors at once! hello, vegan soft serve...
ends march 16th // donate here

3) the grow jar! its a small, hydroponic indoor planter. with your funding, you will get a planter, soil, seeds & everything you need to grow herbs & veggies at home! i love this for people [like us!] that are in apartments, with no outdoor space to grow. also, we are CSA members, so we dont need a huge garden, but having fresh herbs available is so awesome!
ends march 19th // donate here

4) enlightened clothing! they are taking plastic bottles that have been thrown away & turning them into awesome & comfy yoga tops & bottoms. check out the video. this is another one that i really believe in!
ends march 29th // donate here

5) yay! this one is my favorite!! revive the hive with beez kneez honey! kristy & erin live here in the minneapolis & they are doing amazing things with the bee population. they have 'host honey sites' all over the cities. actually, the school that blake is at, they have a hive there. kristy sells her honey at markets, online & in a few shops & co-ops. the awesome thing? she delivers everything by bike [swoon. dream job.] they are looking to raise money to create a honey house, a type of 'home base' for their operation. check out there page & video and get ready to be inspired!
ends march 31st // donate here

so many people doing awesome things!
i love it.

project life : week 1

yay! today is the last day of the month & i *finally* have my first project life layout finished!
i ordered a bunch of photos from postal pix & they took OVER two weeks to arrive.

what is project life? : its a 52-week photo documenting project that is simple & easy.
you take photos, document your week & slip your notes & photos into the binder.
done!
its like scrapbooking without all the really expensive supplies & all the time-taking.

week 1 : december 30th-january 5th

week 1 included coming home for our cross-country drive to north carolina, cupcakes, my first loaf from 40 loaves & a basketball game.

i baked my first '40 loaf' & i love this photo of daphne.
she sat in the backseat of the car all the way to north carolina & back ; she did such a great job!

blake lived in portland for a million years, so hes always been a trailblazers fan. each year, when the blazers play the wolves, i buy him a ticket & i enjoy my yearly basketball game.

we have a really delish bakery near our house, where we have been purchasing a few too many cupcakes!

my mom & aunt drove my grandma down to arizona for the winter & sent us a postcard

so far, i am a fan of project life. its easy & it will be a fun way of recording the little things that happen throughout the year.
i want to remember the days of cupcakes, postcards & cotton candy.

you can read more about project life here

: why i am betting on weight loss & hoping to win $14,000!

happy friday, everybody!
did you know that i am a fitfluential ambassador?
that means that fitfluential [a company] decided that i [ME!] am influential when it comes to healthy living // lifestyle // fitness. it also means that i get to partner with some pretty awesome companies that will make all of our lives easier!
pretty neat!

a couple weeks ago, i got an email from the fitfluential team announcing a friendly weight-loss competition through dietbet.
do you know this site? go see here.
you join a dietbet group [can be your friends, can be total strangers] & place a bet [anywhere from $10-50 ; the group you are in decides the amount]. then, you work your little butt off for the next four weeks. the goal is to lose 4% of your body weight [its always 4%, regardless of your weight!]. if you reach your goal within the time frame, you split the pot with all the other winners.

the site itself is pretty cool. it has a 'wall-feed' similar to facebook, so you can comment on your workouts, what you are eating & general motivation.
you can weigh in as much as you want, but only your initial weight & the final weight count.

SO, i joined the fitfluential dietbet group! [you can still join! we are almost a week in, but people have been signing up each day this week!]
right now, there are 550 of us [!] and the pot is *almost* up to $14,000 [!!!]

i am not a huge fan of dieting [actually, i dont do it!] i measure recipes & ingredients, but find it SO time consuming to count & track each and every calorie.
also, if we are being honest, i can get a bit carried away with tracking ; obsessive, almost.
food is meant to be enjoyed & its all too stressful for me to count everything.

i love to move my body, though! biking [not this week, since it hasnt been above zero for a week!], body pump, hot yoga, walking the dog ; those are all things i really love to do.

i have 4.4 pounds to lose in the next 23 days! i am not 100% confident that i will meet my goal ; but i am excited to try.

my goal is to continue to move a bit more each day & to take over a bit more cooking here at home.
[blake does most of the cooking & he just dumps an entire bag of pasta in ; never thinking about serving size!]
i drink smoothies every day for breakfast & have been making large batches of food for lunch. i snack on fruit, nuts and seeds.
the classes we take at the gym [body pump, body step] get done at 9pm, so by the time we get home, i go right to bed & read for a bit before *finally* getting to bed at a decent time!

i created a pinterest board full of recipes that i have made // plan on making this month ; you can see that here.
also, if you have any awesome recipes to share, please do!

and hello! if all of this isnt motivating enough, what about the fact that you can split a $14,000 pot!?!

what do you think?
have you ever tried anything like this?
would you?
if i decided to create my own dietbet program in the future, would you be interested in joining?

another reason why $10 can change the world

hi everybody!
today, i have a fun, little post for you.
if you have been reading for a while, you know that i am a huge fan of donating money & supporting causes that will make a difference.
a huge part of blake & my's partnership is based on the idea that small changes can really make the world a better place.

we do a lot of our shopping at whole foods. we are lucky to have a location a mile away ; so we go there often. i will gladly pay a bit more for groceries knowing that i am supporting small farmers, start-up companies & giving money to a company that gives back millions of dollars to charity.

a few weeks ago, i got their whole planet newsletter, showcasing L.I.F.E. Line. whole foods has been a longtime financial supporter.
L.I.F.E. Line is an kenya-based organization that employs women to create hand-sewn totes, zipper pouches and incredible hand-beaded bracelets.
each woman is paid 3x the average kenyan salary ; that is huge in a place of deep poverty. also, a large number of the women that are employed have children with special needs. through this program, their children are able to attend school, receive the necessary services & thrive in their community. it is SO powerful!
from their website :
How many people in Kenya does the L.I.F.E. Line support?-27 Malaika Mums
-400+ Maasai Mums
-1 sewing teacher (Liz)
-2 operations managers (Brigid and Vernoica)
-22 employees at Leather Works
-75+ employees at Color Creations
-100+ employees at Sunflag
-5 caretakers for students at Malaika Kids school
-1 occupational therapist at Malaika Kids school
-81 children of Malaika Mums
-1800+ estimated kids & grandkids of Maasai Mums
-----------------
Total individuals supported by the L.I.F.E. Line = 2,514+

a few weeks ago, we were at whole foods & i saw the L.I.F.E. Line bags at the service desk. i love that they have a sewing machine [the one i bought] & a ball of yarn [here] on the bags.

and i really love everything about the zippered pouch [its big enough to put cash, a million cards & change]

i have been taking the bag with me to hot yoga + the gym everyday. i load it up with my water bottle, my mat, a towel & a change of clothes.

also, the beaded bracelets are here & they are stunning.

you can purchase the bags at whole foods or online.
i love this. you spend $10 on a reusable bag & you support a woman, her child & her community THOUSANDS of miles away. [i really hope it gives you goosebumps!]

disclaimer : i bought the bag + the change pouch with my own money ; whole foods doesnt know who i am. i just want to change the planet!

stay connected to L.I.F.E. Line :

fitness friday! : the time i went snowshoeing :

happy friday, everybody!
today, i have a surprise day off [much needed!] ; so i will be baking bead, walking my pup & reading harry potter.

one of my goals for 101 things in 1001 days is to snowshoe ; i have wanted to do it for years. they are a little pricey [$100+ -ish] so i wanted to test them out before purchasing. also, the minnesota weather is silly. two winters ago, we got almost 100 inches of snow & last winter, im not sure we got 30 inches ; so its hard to commit to something you might not be able to use for two years...

last weekend, the minneapolis park service had a really cool volunteer opportunity :  come down to the mississippi river for 2 1/2 hours. we will give you snowshoes & a beautiful tour of the riverfront & then you can help us clean some brush out of the woods.
exercise, exploring & volunteering?! right up our alley!
so, we met with 20+ other folks, strapped on some snowshoes & hiked around the riverfront. [last weekend, we had about 12-13 inches of snow ; a lot of it is packed down pretty hard][last night, we got a few hours of freezing rain, so a lot of it is now washed away]

the snowshoes were surprisingly easy to put on. there is no 'right' or 'left' shoe ; and you strap in your feet like you would with a pair of rollerblades.
we walked up & down hills & some icy areas. underneath the shoes, there are metal 'grippers' ; like an ice pic..

i really enjoyed it & didnt find it super difficult. my legs were a bit sore the next day & my heart rate got up a few times.

my main budget goal right now is to pay off my student loans [march 2013, baby! thats the goal!] & then to purchase a new bed, BUT if an extra $130 fell into my lap, i would definitely purchase a pair soon!

what do you think?
have you been snowshoeing before?
any questions? [i can try to answer..]

shopping with daphne : december bark box reveal : [another post for the dog lovers]

hey everybody!
this post is for the 'dog people' out there.
for the past few months now, we have been getting the barkbox.
what is it?
its a monthly mail subscription service. each month, your pup [you customize the package based on their size] gets a box in the mail with anything from treats, hygiene products & toys.
this is daphnes 4th box & i think its her favorite so far ;)
how do i know?
because i kept the bark box in the craft room ; waiting for enough daylight to take a photo.
we have been training daphne to be out of her cage during the day, while we are at work. she gets the living room & the kitchen. we close the hallway door & the doors to the craft room and the bedroom.
i came home the other day & not only had she OPENED the hallway door [hello, she doesnt have thumbs!], but she got into the craft room AND tore apart the bark box.
*sigh*

so, what was in the december bark box!?

this awesome shampoo ; smells so good.
this poor, destroyed monkey. really, he never stood a chance.. [he is made from organic cotton & SO soft] [we really love this company for everything they do!]

a box of red velvet cake mix [its wheat-free] GUYS! seriously, red velvet cake for dogs?! i love it!
and a bag of these dog treats. [no picture of the treats, because she ate the entire bag while we were gone]

so, the photos of this months box were a total bust, but the box itself was a total win for our [naughty] pup.

disclaimer : we purchased the barkbox with our own money. we love supporting small companies & spending tons of money on our dog, so she can destroy everything ;)
